Who's Jim?

Jim is a composer, sound designer and musician who has been primarily working in theatre since 2015. He has also worked within dance and independant films. Jim operates with a flair for fresh perspectives on existing conventions and with a keen interest in cross-art collaborations. As a composer/sound designer, his key skills include: composing original music, either to be performed live or studio produced; designing soundscapes; creating works through devised workshops; creating tailor made material. As a musician his key skills are in both improvisation and score based performance. Jim’s primary instrument is the saxophone and his secondary’s include: flute, clarinet, guitar and the harmonica.

Jim’s training involved studying music and composition at the University of Surrey, attaining a Masters Degree in composition. During that time collaborations involved other musicians as well as dance choreographers, but during a year internship an opportunity arose part way to collaborate within theatre. From age 11 he started as a saxophonist and jazz musician, since then he has gathered more instruments and more equipment, incorporating elements of jazz, classical, electronica, musique concrète and found sound into his toolkit. He has primarily created sound and music for theatre productions, but has also worked on audio plays, orchestral concerts, and dance.

Seeking collaborators to create new work has been the driving force to widening his diversity. It is in these spaces, through improvisation and close interpersonal feedback, where he finds the true excitement in creativity.

From jazz to classical, acoustic to electronic, subtle ambiences to huge dramatic cues, Jim is widely versed to create bespoke sound and music.
